About the Course: The Portrait and The Mask
Designed for beginners as well as experienced sculptors, our October retreat explores the traditions and techniques underpinning two fundamental forms of human representation: the portrait and the mask.
Where masks can conceal identity, evoke transformation, and serve ritualistic purposes, portraits aim to reveal the essence of a person, capturing their likeness and psyche. This workshop establishes a dialogue between these contrasting yet reciprocal art forms, providing a conceptual analysis for their historical significance and cultural functions.
Through regular lectures, demonstrations, and life study, participants are invited to reflect on the layers of meaning that these art forms embody and, perhaps, to map this framework onto their own practice.
In tandem, the workshop offers practical training in the methods of portrait sculpture. Attendees learn the processes and techniques to create lifelike representations of the human face. From initial clay sketches to a finished work, participants engage in a thorough study of the portrait. Supported by demonstrations and one-on-one tutorials, the workshops break down complex anatomical structures into simple, manageable forms.
For beginners, the tutor guides you through each stage of the sculpting process, ensuring you develop a solid foundation in life sculpture while maintaining and expanding your individual style. Experienced sculptors receive consistent, focused mentorship detailing anatomy, compositional choices and the nuanced decisions for finalising works.
The workshop is designed to culminate in the creation of a finished sculpture (or multiple sculptures) that marries the conceptual and technical applications of the course. At the end of the residency, participants are invited to present their finished works at Baraka Art Space, where we will have a public presentation and closing party.
Materials
Each student will receive 37.5 kg of clay (three 12.5 kg bags), pedestals, tools and finishing materials. Additional clay may be purchased on site. A professional life model will be present daily throughout the course.
